Oviedo

Land Area: 15.1 Square Miles in Seminole County Florida

The City of Oviedo is located in the eastern part of Seminole County.  This community boasts great schools, great shopping in the new Marketplace Mall and easy access to the Greeneway Expressway.  Oviedo has many beautiful lakes for recreational sports such as fishing, boating, and skiing. Oviedo also has numerous parks and wildlife areas.

HistoryOviedo's roots go back to a tiny settlement on the south shore of Lake Jesup.  This little settlement, known as Solary's wharf, boasted 2 general stores ad a Post Office in 1875.  White settlers had just begun to appear, attracted by the warm climate, the promise of a long growing season, and the expectation of homesteading.  The land toward the interior, away from the lake's shores, was still largely uninhabited.  By 1950, Oviedo was the second largest town in Seminole County, with a population of 1,800.  Nearly one million crates of celery and a third of a million crates of citrus were being shipped from Oviedo each year.
With the opening of the University of Central Florida (then known as Florida Technological University) in 1968 came the promise of greater growth~ and more growing pains.  But despite it's growth, the city tried to keep it's small town aura.  For the most part, the townspeople were pleased  with the growth and welcomed newcomers, provided they were prepared to slip into the easy style of country living.

During the 1960's, however, the rate of growth accelerated.  New housing developments appeared, a new high school was erected, roads leading to Oviedo were widened and repaved, and the University brought even more new residents into the area.  The growth slowed in the 1970's with the economic recessions, but with the location of high-tech industries around UCF, the rate of growth has accelerated greatly in recent years, bringing in even more new subdivisions and businesses to the area once known as the Lake Jesup Community.
